Humboldt County, CA implements a new cannabis enforcement program using satellite imagery
Humboldt County, CA Cannabis Enforcement Program Satellite
Complete
The Environmental Impact Reduction Program identifies cannabis operations without permits in the county. Ongoing satellite access purchased by the Planning and Building Department captures footage of these operations. County officials send enforcement personnel to levy fines at exact locations instead of relying on resident complaints. Humboldt County created the program to enforce legal cannabis rules while reducing the impacts of illegal farms on wildlife and waterways.
Project Succeeded
The program found 1,000 unpermitted sites in its early months with 400 sites on track to reach compliance. A $10,000 fine per offense more than offset the costs of satellite access.
