Ku-ring-gai, NSW experiments with Bee Lottery due to the popularity of its native beehive program

Council officials first offered native bee hive placement at volunteer homes in 2006. The growing popularity of the program led to a 2020 pilot of a Bee Lottery instead of a waitlist. Interested households entered their names for a random drawing in December. The Environmental Programs team installed 50 hives in optimal locations for bee health. The Bee Lottery expanded the program's reach, thus improving public education about stingless native bees essential to ecological health.
