London Borough of Southwark, GB completes London-first district heating project for council homes
London Borough of Southwark, GB District Heating Homes
Complete
Borough officials began this project with a 2019 feasibility study and regular meetings with council home residents. Water-source heat pumps were installed 120 meters below the council's Consort, Newington, and Wyndham estates. These pumps run naturally heated water through pipes in 2,175 homes, thus replacing aging and emissions-heavy gas boilers. The district heating project reduces energy use by up to 34% and annual carbon emissions by 1,774 tons.
