The London Borough of Sutton partnered with North, an IoT service provider, and Daizy, an IoT management platform, to launch a pilot that assess the usage of green spaces. The pilot uses funding from the Innovate UK initiative to install sensors at seven local parks which monitor footfall data at key points of interest. The data is being analyzed to determine whether the green spaces meet the needs of local residents.

Borough officials are working with IoT Solutions Group on the one-year pilot. Smart sensors near disabled parking spots track the frequency and duration of usage by each vehicle. Eleven car parks are equipped with sensors that alert Sutton Council to after-hours entry often associated with illegal dumping. This trial - part of the InnOvaTe Project - fills in data gaps left by CCTV blindspots and periodic inspections by enforcement officers.

The sensors send notifications to assigned personnel when surface water levels represent threats to local streets. Contractors are deployed to divert excess water from drains and minimize the impacts of heavy rains. The Aquasition pilot is the council's response to a 2020 flood in Kingston Town Centre that halted traffic and damaged properties.

A six-month pilot rewarded 327 participants for walking, biking, or using scooters instead of driving. The borough worked with BetterPoints to create an app-based rewards system based on mileage and total activities. Participants turned earned rewards into vouchers for local businesses and charities. The BetterPoints pilot concluded with 28,000 trips covering 16,000 miles.
