Northland Regional Council, NZ tests Drought Early Warning System ahead of Cook Islands deployment
Northland Regional Council, NZ Drought Early Warning System
Council engineers worked with Engineers without Borders on a nationally funded pilot of DEWS after a Cook Islands trial was delayed due to COVID-19. Smart sensors gathered real-time data on reserve levels in Ngunguru and Te Kao. Local households were surveyed about water consumption levels. Collected data along with weather forecasts informed predictions of drought conditions. DEWS provides ample warning of water shortages for local officials and emergency personnel.
