The centerpiece of the portal is a hazard property viewer with projections for every lot in the region. Portal users enter addresses of interest and select lots for detailed information about property hazards. Each file includes estimates of risks for coastal erosion, river flooding events, and sea level impacts from 2023 through 2130. The Natural Hazards Portal educates users about environmental hazards with introductory sections on topics like flood risk management and climate change.

Northland Regional Council, NZ tests Drought Early Warning System ahead of Cook Islands deployment

Council engineers worked with Engineers without Borders on a nationally funded pilot of DEWS after a Cook Islands trial was delayed due to COVID-19. Smart sensors gathered real-time data on reserve levels in Ngunguru and Te Kao. Local households were surveyed about water consumption levels. Collected data along with weather forecasts informed predictions of drought conditions. DEWS provides ample warning of water shortages for local officials and emergency personnel.

Northland Regional Council, NZ approves $15.5 million redevelopment of an old supermarket site

The Northland Regional Council approved a $15.5 million (NZD) contract with Acro Group for the redevelopment a former supermarket site. The Council plans to retain full ownership over the majority of the property as a tenanted investment. The redevelopment plans include splitting the refurbished supermarket building into a dozen tenancies, a medical precinct, a gym, a child care centre, and various retail businesses.

Far North District Council is partnering with Northland Regional Council, Kaipara District Council, and Whangarei District Council to develop the Te Tai Tokerau Regional Accessibility Strategy. The Council created an online survey asking residents to help identify key accessibility issues related to transportation, public spaces, information services, and community consultations. The goal of this strategy is to create a community where everyone can access all places, activities, and services.

Kaipara District Council, NZ installed LittaTraps to collect and divert trash in stormwater grates

Kaipara District Council partnered with Northland Regional Council and NorthTec to install eight LittaTraps inside local stormwater grates. The LittaTraps collect roadside trash before it accumulates in the waterways. During the pilot, NorthTec is regularly examining the traps to monitor the volume and type of trash entering the Council's stormwater systems.
