Rotterdam, ZH turns flat rooftop glut into resilient infrastructure with Multifunctional Rooftops

Local officials viewed its 18.5 kilometers of flat roofing as an underutilized asset. Multifunctional Rooftops began with color-coded roofs for water retention (blue) and solar panels (yellow). Remote valve controls on blue roofs allowed water distribution during rainstorms. The pilot expanded to seven different roof types by 2021 including green for biodiversity and orange for mobility. Rotterdam also developed an online tool for evaluating the best uses of a residential or commercial rooftop.

Rotterdam, ZH is testing three self-pressing smart waste bins to increase waste capacity

The municipality of Rotterdam is testing three self-pressing smart waste bins. The self-pressing waste bin compresses waste, creating more space. The press system allows 600 liters of waste to be placed in the bin compared to the standard maximum capacity of 200 liters. The increase capacity means that the municipality does not have to empty the new waste bins as often which saves time, money, and carbon emissions.

Amsterdam, NH and Rotterdam inform motorists of excessive noise with sensor and signage pilot

Amsterdam's public health team determined one-fifth of city residents experienced excessive noise from motorcycles and cars. Noise detection sensors were placed at locations throughout both cities for the summer pilot. Vehicle noise exceeding the sensor's tolerance triggers a digital sign saying "Too Loud." Local officials will not issue tickets during the trial, instead using sensor data in determining the effectiveness of raised awareness on noise levels.
