Salzburg (Stadt), SBG follows a successful smart bin pilot with additional units in its city center
City officials initially trialed a smart bin near Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's birthplace on the Getreidegasse. The bin uses a solar-powered compactor to hold 750 liters - more than six times the capacity of a standard bin - prior to collection. Automated messages sent to street cleaning staffers when bins are full reduce traffic, emissions, and congestion on busy streets. Early successes encouraged Salzburg to add three bins throughout the city center.

Salzburg (Stadt), SBG partners with university researchers on GrünFZ sustainable planning framework
This first-in-Austria method grades construction projects based on green spaces included in proposed designs. Salzburg and BOKU created a five-step application that makes it easy to use for developers. The GrünFZ formula calculates the space taken by tree canopy, gardens, and green roofs relative to each project's square meterage. Framework users are informed how green components of their designs impact the environment and benefit the public.
