The city's traffic engineering team sought a solution for the high number of motorcycle accidents on busy streets. The Faixa Azul - Blue Strip - project added a motorcycle-only lane between the two leftmost lanes of Avenida 23 de Maio. Motorcyclists are encouraged to use the lane when vehicle traffic has slowed. Traffic engineers observe the 5.5-kilometer stretch of lane each day for accidents, close calls, and slowdowns.
