Somerset County Council, GB expands housing options for Ukrainian refugees with landlord incentive

Somerset County Council seeks long-term housing options for refugees currently supported by local families. Participating landlords offer leases of at least one year with monthly rates priced at the Local Housing Allowance level. Signed leases result in one-time payments of up to £4,000 per unit based on the number of bedrooms. The incentive program brings empty apartments into use and creates a reliable housing pipeline for refugees arriving through the Home for Ukraine initiative.

Somerset County Council, GB Recycle More program expands Waste Partnership with local councils

Recycle More added a 60-liter blue bag to the three-bin system used by the Somerset Waste Partnership. Residents place plastic trays and food cartons in the bag for weekly collection. The new program also allows the disposal of batteries and small electronics in a separate bag. Somerset Waste Partnership trialed Recycle More in Mendip before countywide expansion through early 2022. Local officials anticipate decreased bin contamination and illegal dumping due to increased recycling.
