St. Clair County, IL improved cybersecurity with multi-factor authentication and password policies
St. Clair County approved a new policy to add multi-factor authentication to county accounts and raise requirements on county network passwords. The county enacted the policy in order to improve its network's defenses after being targeted with a cyberattack by Grief, a ransomware group, which demanded payment in cryptocurrencies. After the attack, the county's website was down for days and several services were down for weeks including access to court and tax records.
