The project follows a finding that 40% of households do not receive national emergency text messages due to limited phone connectivity. Council officials identified 300 households for the pilot. Each IAD is powered by an electrical outlet and uses FM radio signals to communicate civil emergency alerts. Participants received IADs for one week with up to four tests during the trial period. Council leaders are considering the replacement of tsunami sirens with IADs over a 10-year period.

Waitomo District Council launched, Alpha One, its new online building consent system. Alpha One allows residents to submit and track building projects online including consents, information memorandums, acceptance certificates, consent exemptions, and code compliance certificates. The Council now requires all building consent applications to be completed online except for public use certificates. This consent process is consistent across all eight Councils in the Waikato Building Consent Group.
