Redland, QLD brings autonomous shuttle pilot to Karragarra Island

Redland, QLD Karragarra Island Autonomous Shuttle Pilot

Complete

Redland City Council initiated the six-month trial with a shuttle supplied by the Royal Automobile Club of Queensland (RACQ). The shuttle was free to ride and operated each weekday in conjunction with ferries to the mainland. Redland and RACQ used Karragarra Island as a test location due to a lack of local public transit options. If successful, driverless shuttles could be introduced to surrounding islands.

Redlands Coast Smart Mobility Trial | Your Say Redlands Coast

⚠️ The RACQ smart shuttle autonomous vehicle trial operating as a driverless bus on Karragarra Island has temporarily ceased operations until further notice in order to help slow the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). Thank you for your understanding. Redland City Council is partnering with RACQ to bring an exciting and innovative transport trial to the Southern Moreton Bay Islands. The Redlands Coast Smart Mobility Trial is a joint initiative between the RACQ and Redland City Council with the support of SEQ Council of Mayors, which will trial the use of the RACQ Smart Shuttle on Karragarra Island. This Autonomous Vehicle is supplied by RACQ for the trial, which started on Karragarra Island on 26 November 2019 and will run for 6 months until May 2020. The trial is free for passengers, with the vehicle running from Monday to Thursday 9.30am–3.30pm and Friday 9.30am–12.30pm around the ferry schedule. It is designed to test autonomous transport for potential future applications across Queensland. This is a trial only at this stage, with the information to inform Council and RACQ about potential future applications, as well as helping Council advocate to other levels of government for increased transport for our community. We are excited that the Southern Moreton Bay Islands are host to the first ever deployment of a long-term Autonomous Vehicle trial in Queensland. There is no doubt our islands have unique transport challenges that require unique transport solutions and this trial shows Council’s commitment to finding innovative transport solutions for our residents.

Project Succeeded

Redland City Council and RACQ approved a second phase of the pilot near Raby Bay.
