The six-month pilot will dispatch a two-person PIC team on 911 and 211 calls related to non-violent health issues. The team features a mental health practitioner and a social worker on call 24 hours a day. PIC interventions include de-escalation techniques and crisis counseling once the scene is deemed secure. Residents with psychological and substance abuse issues are referred to additional services that improve their health outcomes.

Rochester, N. Y. – Leaders in Rochester officially launched a new tool Thursday, aimed at helping people dealing with mental crises. The Person in Crisis Team aims to provide an “alternative response” to calls involving mental health or substance abuse, offering its services before police respond to non-violent emergency calls. The team is made up of 14 certified personnel, trained to deescalate situations and offer resources to those in need.
