Summary

“Smart City” international recognition...again

It has been 2 years since Marietta, GA announced the release of the “Trash Talk” app - a citizen-centered sanitation app aimed at delivering easy access to information on collection days, while improving compliance with trash rules.

The City of Marietta’s was awarded a 2019 Top 50 Smart City award for community engagement thanks to the work by their Sanitation and IT Departments, together with $ Recollect$  to deliver the free app. This marks the second consecutive year the City of Marietta has been recognized for their innovative use of resources and technology (also a Top 50 Smart City award winner for smart mobility in 2018 for their development of the $ TravelSafely App$ ).

Setting the bar for digital citizen service

The Trash Talk app can be downloaded by Marietta residents, and offers push notifications to alert residents of changes to collection days or interruptions in service due to weather, for instance. Search tools are available for easy access to information on disposal of questionable items (such as paint or motor oil) and even provides directions to the closest facility for disposal.

Questions on recycling can be answered using the $ Waste Wizard powered by Recollect$ . The app also lets residents schedule off cycle pickups and automatically applies the extra charge to their monthly bill, if applicable.

The app has decreased resident phone calls to the city employees with questions on days of service, complaints about lapse in service (perhaps due to scheduled city holiday they were not aware of), and inquiries about disposal of various items.

Text message or email push notifications ensure residents are informed of any changes to the schedule and residents can access the app at any time to view the schedule and obtain useful information about their city-run sanitation services and have proven much more effective than information posted on the City’s website or social media outlets.

We congratulate Marietta for their consistent efforts to promote better use of technology to deliver superior digital citizen services. The City’s $ focus on ways to make the City more accessible and available to address any issues that arise $ has paid off. By leveraging their highly skilled employees and citizen feedback, the City has delivered back-to-back award winning apps.
