Sonoma County and non-profit network COAD evaluated communities most impacted by the storms when selecting center locations. 211 Sonoma County assists residents in determining their eligibility through a system first tested early in the COVID-19 pandemic. County officials are focusing on marginalized populations with limited access to disaster assistance and financial aid. The Recovery Support Center model mitigates inequitable aid distribution while quickly responding to resident needs.

Yarra Ranges, VIC Healing in our Gardens initiative builds resiliency following 2021 storms
One thousand residents experienced tree loss and significant garden damage during the storms. Healing in our Gardens partners volunteers not impacted by the storms with affected neighbors. The council, local landscapers, and gardening groups provide advice to partnered residents about replacing what was lost with beneficial plants. This project is part of a Resilient Yarra Ranges effort that includes a microgrid feasibility study and solar power for disaster relief centers.

Coral Springs, FL developed a damage rapid assessment application to assist in emergency operations
The City of Coral Springs partnered with ESRI to develop a damage rapid assessment application to support emergency response management during a natural disaster or catastrophic event. The application can be deployed in the field to collect data including: the type of damage, severity, amount of injured people, hazards, GPS coordinates, surveillance images, etc. The collected data is transmitted vis cellular connection to the Emergency Operations Center and displayed in a real-time dashboard.

The New York City Mayor's Office of Climate Resiliency has partnered with the the Center for New York City Neighborhoods and the Wharton Risk Management and Decision Processes Center at the University of Pennsylvania to improve post-flood financial resiliency for low-income households. The project uses innovative parametric insurance program pilots and capacity building within the city to harness risk-transfer markets and ensure disaster victims are paid quickly and effectively.

The city of Sulphur created a private property debris removal program to help residents affected by Hurricane Laura. Applicants must provide a valid driver's license or other form of identification, proof of loss or statement of loss if insured, and a deed or tax statement of to document property ownership. Participants can have their damaged structures demolished and debris removed from their property at no cost.

The Cerro Gordo County Emergency Management Agency offered residents two free Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) basic training sessions. The CERT training sessions provided participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies and disasters the could impact them at home, work, or school. The CERT training covered a variety of skills including disaster medical operations, light search and rescue, and fire safety and suppression.

The beneficiaries are being given interest-free loans ranging from 10,000 to 40,000 pesos with a zero percent interest rate with a payable term of up to 24 months.

New York, NY plans private weather forecasting service with neighborhood-specific storm warnings
New York City is planning to hire a private weather forecasting service in response to severe flooding caused by Hurricane Ida. The private weather forecaster would supplement National Weather Service predictions and create neighborhood-specific storm forecasts. According to the new plan, the city will issue more aggressive weather warnings that include mandatory evacuation orders for basement apartments and travel bans for roads and subways before heavy rains are forecast.

Cedar Rapids, IA launched the Neighborhood P.A.C.T. Emergency Preparedness Initiative
The City of Cedar Rapids launched the Neighborhood P.A.C.T. Emergency Preparedness Initiative to protect residents from natural disasters. The P.A.C.T. initiative was designed to educate residents on preparing for emergencies, how to act during disasters, accessing emergency communications, and training with humanitarian organizations. The P.A.C.T. initiative also covers monthly emergency preparedness topics such as power outages, generator safety, heat emergencies, etc.
