Sonoma County, CA Recovery Support Centers seek equitable response to winter storms

Sonoma County and non-profit network COAD evaluated communities most impacted by the storms when selecting center locations. 211 Sonoma County assists residents in determining their eligibility through a system first tested early in the COVID-19 pandemic. County officials are focusing on marginalized populations with limited access to disaster assistance and financial aid. The Recovery Support Center model mitigates inequitable aid distribution while quickly responding to resident needs.

Yarra Ranges, VIC Healing in our Gardens initiative builds resiliency following 2021 storms

One thousand residents experienced tree loss and significant garden damage during the storms. Healing in our Gardens partners volunteers not impacted by the storms with affected neighbors. The council, local landscapers, and gardening groups provide advice to partnered residents about replacing what was lost with beneficial plants. This project is part of a Resilient Yarra Ranges effort that includes a microgrid feasibility study and solar power for disaster relief centers.

The City of Coral Springs partnered with ESRI to develop a damage rapid assessment application to support emergency response management during a natural disaster or catastrophic event. The application can be deployed in the field to collect data including: the type of damage, severity, amount of injured people, hazards, GPS coordinates, surveillance images, etc. The collected data is transmitted vis cellular connection to the Emergency Operations Center and displayed in a real-time dashboard.

The city of Sulphur created a private property debris removal program to help residents affected by Hurricane Laura. Applicants must provide a valid driver's license or other form of identification, proof of loss or statement of loss if insured, and a deed or tax statement of to document property ownership. Participants can have their damaged structures demolished and debris removed from their property at no cost.
