Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional, NSW hosts Minecraft Sustainable Design Competition for local students
The QPRC Minecraft Sustainable Design Competition sought entries from residents aged 5 to 17. Participants were asked to construct sustainable structures and spaces in a Minecraft map of the region. The four-week competition asked students for unique solutions to transportation, energy, and water quality challenges. A June 2022 event presented submissions by finalists with awards given to an overall winner, three age group winners, and three category winners.

Calgary, AB and local schools envision the future of the city's downtown with a Minecraft challenge
The Level Up, Calgary challenge asked 12,000 public school students to explore a virtual version of the city. Participants were asked to integrate the Downtown Strategy into a Minecraft world and suggest their own improvements. Each student submitted a one-minute video explaining their ideas and how they would enrich city life. Winners in four age groups - K-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12 - collaborate with city planners on adapting their suggestions for the real world.

Pforzheim, BW asks young residents to envision the city's future with Minetest program
Residents aged 9 to 22 were invited to redesign Pforzheim with the open-source program. Design teams first built the city's existing buildings on a common server. This stage included online chats and regular workshops where young planners shared their experiences. Participants are later encouraged to fill vacant lots and underused spaces with their own designs. The program builds collaborative and design skills while increasing youth connections to the city.

Launceston, SA turns years of LiDAR scans of city center into a Minecraft world
City staff produce three-dimensional models of development projects from LiDAR data. Multiple years of scans were translated into data for a Minecraft version of downtown Launceston. An initial version of the world was used during school visits to highlight the possibilities of city planning. Users of the Java and Education editions of the game can add, subtract, or change local streets and attractions like UTAS Stadium.

Adelaide, SA creates two new worlds in Minecraft based on the city's past and future
The city introduced Minecraft worlds based on Adelaide's founding in 1836 and post-pandemic future in 2021. Players in the 1836 map use an initial plan for 19th century Adelaide and add or modify assets that fit into the natural landscape. The 2021 version tasks players with ushering Adelaide into economic prosperity following the COVID-19 outbreak. This version applies 8 billion blocks to recreate modern Adelaide for users.

Kelowna, BC celebrates GIS Day by producing a Minecraft version of the city with open data
The city's Information Services team used more than 150 datasets to create a Kelowna world for the popular video game. Minecraft players can explore and build within a 3-D model of the city that includes realistic streets, waterways, and parks. In four simple steps, the Kelowna Minecraft world can be added to a user's computer. Kelowna pursued this project to encourage open data portal use and interest by young residents in GIS.
