City officials pursued the program because of ongoing talent shortages in key industries. Fifteen local businesses are matched with skilled immigrants for six-week mentoring sessions. Participants learn about Australian work culture, life in Ballarat, and opportunities for career growth from their mentors. Ballarat and HOST International help the families of mentored workers settle into the city in cases where mentoring relationships lead to accepted job offers.

The council worked with nine local farmers and energy consultants to turn straw stubble into low-cost bioenergy pellets. Shire leaders facilitated the development of a multi-fuel boiler with Beaufort and Skipton Health Services. The system's Skipton facility currently uses pellets to power the boiler with potential expansion into new energy sources like plant husks and shells. Pyrenees also worked with project partners to develop a mobile pellet producer that cuts production costs.
