Just two years after starting a composting pilot program in the City of Beverly, the decision has been made to open it up to the entire community. Waste Reduction Committee co-chairman Jim Bauer said the exceptionally high participation rate in the pilot program was a huge factor in making the choice to expand the option to more residents. Conor Miller, founder of Black Earth Compost, which collects the compost in Beverly, said participation is higher in the Garden City than in most other

Project Succeeded

The two year pilot program saw resident participation rates of over 80%. Residents typically did not contaminate the composting pickup as well. The city saved $20 for every household that participated in the program. Residents put out an average of 12 pounds of compost a week.
