Bundaberg, QLD tracks progress toward its One Million Trees goal with engagement portal

The regional council set the planting goal for the end of 2024 on the path to a net-zero community by 2030. Residents head to the portal to request two seedlings per home or up to 250 free trees as part of the Landowner Program. There are also online forms for submitting trees planted at a resident's expense and suggesting locations for council planting. Inputs from these sources produce a map of every tree planted in Bundaberg with 122,617 trees recorded as of March 23, 2023.

Industrial discharge of liquid waste - or trade water - previously required two forms and lengthy reviews for approval. A new application system consolidates the process into a single form for faster completion and processing. The AI-enabled system automatically fills out trade water applications with relevant project information from other documents. Bundaberg, QLD visualizes light pollution data as part of Reducing Urban Glow project

The council worked with national, state, and private sector partners to install 75 light sensors. Each sensor measures ambient light brightness and cloud cover. Data from eastern Bundaberg and coastal communities result in brightness heat maps updated every 15 minutes. The Reducing Urban Glow website includes a time-lapsed book of recent heat maps for context. Bundaberg created the project to reduce artificial light use that endangers local sea turtle nests.
