Council teams distributed 750 relief packages with food and hygiene products to self-isolated households. The initiative completed calls to 1,000 households and nearly 200 businesses to check on their needs during COVID-19. Business owners received social distancing packets containing multi-lingual stickers and signs. Local officials complemented Burwood Cares with $30 AUD rate rebates for households and waived health inspections for businesses.

Burwood, NSW engages renters in food waste diversion with Apartment Composting Pilot Project
Council officials designed the project for improved waste diversion messaging to rental units. Three apartment buildings will receive shared compost bins from the council. A community-building campaign will explain how residents can work together to improve the environment. Burwood is offering the program free to apartment managers and tenants with plans for expansion based on pilot feedback.

City staffers involved with the program provide cards with contacts for social services to homeless residents. Each card comes with a $5 AUD payphone card and a $10 AUD transit card that reduce barriers to assistance. Council leaders are training staff to focus card delivery on homeless residents who request assistance or require immediate help.
