Colchester Borough Council launched the "Clean Air for Colchester" survey to raise awareness of local air quality issues and encourage residents to take action. The survey was designed to help the Council better understand what residents know about air quality and the impact it has on their health. The main source of local pollution is vehicles therefore the survey specifically examined driving habits.

The "Clean Air for Colchester" survey was completed by 1,181 residents and revealed a large majority of drivers in Colchester are prepared to take action, by turning off their car engines when stationary, because they are concerned about poor air quality in the borough. Among participants, 87% of adults reported concerned about air quality in general and 84% would now consider switching off their engine regularly.
