The Hamilton City Transportation Unit worked with Aware Group on AI-enabled counters that discern vehicles from pedestrians. Hamilton is the first local government in New Zealand to use smart traffic signal controllers for traffic flow optimization. The BriefCam analytics system uses CCTV footage for studies of road and public space use. The in-house Transport Data Analytics Platform turns data from various sources into real-time information on roadway incidents.

Hamilton City Council, NZ launched its largest and most accessible community engagement campaign
Hamilton City Council launched its largest community engagement campaign to make it as easy as possible for residents to provide feedback on its 2021-2031 draft Long-Term Plan. The draft consultation document was translated into six different languages including a video in New Zealand Sign Language. The Council also worked with engineering consultancy BECA to train "Frankly" an artificial intelligence chatbot to gather feedback from residents.

Hamilton City Council, NZ implemented award-winning safety improvements at its busiest intersection
Hamilton City Council partnered with NZ Transport Agency to implement major safety improvements at, the Gordon Road corridor, one of its busiest intersections. The Council installed traffic lights, lowered the speed limit, and introduced raised safety platforms in order to reduce the average speed of vehicles in the interaction. These improvements support the Council's Vision Zero initiative to achieve zero local road fatalities.

Hamilton City Council, NZ is using the Infor Field Inspector app for building and water asset checks
Hamilton City Council has started using the Infor Field Inspector app to conduct warrant of fitness checks on buildings and fifteen different types of water asset inspections. The app allows inspections to be entered directly into the system in real-time. The GPS map of the city's water network allows users to easily locate any hydrant or water valve and it plots efficient routes between sites to reduce the use of fuel. The Council also plans to use the app for the maintenance of street trees.

Hamilton City Council, NZ converted stadium into a COVID-19 self-isolation site for freedom campers
The Hamilton City Council converted a local stadium carpark into a COVID-19 self-isolation site for freedom campers with a strict requirement for physical distancing. Freedom camping is a practice that allows visitors to explore the city for free by parking self-contained vehicles at select locations. This project was specifically requested by the Waikato Civil Defense Emergency Management Group to help eliminate non-essential travel during the pandemic.
