Kansas City, MO considers ordinance to guarantee free legal counseling for tenants during evictions

Kansas City, MO free legal counseling tenant evicitions

Ideation

The Kansas City Council has proposed a new ordinance which would provide free legal representation to local renters during conflicts with landlords to address the growing issue of housing instability. Currently, fewer than 3% of Kansas City tenants receive any legal representation during eviction proceedings. If approved, the city would need to hire an additional 18 attorneys handle the caseload and the program would cost approximately $2.5 million annually to operate.
