New York, NY launches AI track maintenance pilot with Google Public Sector
New York City's Metropolitan Transportation Authority has partnered with Google Public Sector to launch the TrackInspect pilot program, which uses AI and sensor technology to enhance subway track maintenance by detecting defects before they cause disruptions. Google Pixel smartphones, mounted on R46 subway cars along the A line, capture vibrations and sound patterns, transmitting data to cloud-based systems where machine learning algorithms generate predictive maintenance alerts.
Project Succeeded
During the pilot phase, the system identified 92 percent of defect locations found by human inspectors, collecting extensive data including 335 million sensor readings and 1,200 hours of audio to improve diagnostic accuracy. The MTA aims to assess the scalability and cost-effectiveness of this technology, with plans to explore additional sensor integrations to further refine the system.
