Selwyn District Council, NZ RFID tags track wheelie bins

In Progress

Selwyn District Council is using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags to track 51,000 rubbish, recycling and organics wheelie bins. The RFID tags are automatically scanned each time the bins are collected which allows the Council to maintain accurate records of the bins at each household. If the RFID tags identify a bin where it wasn't originally allocated the resident are given the option to pay to keep it or have it removed by the Council.
