Wellington Regional Council, NZ climate change impact maps

Wellington Regional Council developed online interactive maps detailing the predicted future impacts of climate change across the region. The predictions are based on data supplied from a climate change report the Council commissioned from the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA). The carbon-dioxide emission scenarios cover impacts on variables such as rainfall, temperature, evotranspiration, etc.

Wellington Regional Council created a new online interactive flood hazard map to help the community understand the impact of flooding in the area. The map specifically details the impact of a large local flood which has a one percent chance of occurring within any year. The Wellington Region Flood Hazards Map is modeled on surveys of critical areas, analysis of historic flood photographs, and local knowledge.

Wellington Regional Council provided its regional park rangers with electric bikes as part of its goal to become carbon neutral by 2030. The electric bikes improve the mobility of park rangers while reducing the amount of time they spent in vehicles thereby decreasing carbon emissions. The KTM electric mountain bikes were supplied by Electrify NZ. The electric bikes will be used by park rangers for track building, facility inspections, general rounds, etc.

Forrest City, AR breaks ground on solar plants to power all of the city's operations

City officials and Scenic Hill Solar are developing three solar plants powered by 7,000 panels. The plants are slated to replace other energy sources for Forrest City's buildings and daily operations. The 3.46-megawatt solar facilities are expected to create 5.8 million kilowatt-hours per year. Forrest City also moves toward carbon neutrality by eliminating 115,952 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions.

Cornwall Council, GB adds to renewable energy portfolio with a new wind turbine and battery

The 2.3-megawatt turbine is the first in Cornwall to be connected to a smart grid. The power generated by the turbine is distributed based on current energy demands. Council officials estimate that the turbine can power 1,180 homes every year. A 1-megawatt battery built by Centrica provides backup power in case the area grid falters. These developments will help the council achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.
