Malden, MA Data-Driven Approach Lead Water Pipe Replacement
Forty-seven percent of Malden's water pipes were lead in 2016, the highest percentage in the state. The Malden Lead Lines tool uses school data and GIS mapping for the identification of students exposed to lead lines. The resulting spreadsheet estimates total exposure years, the number of children served per line, and exposure years per 100 yards. City officials rely on this resource to maximize funds for public pipe replacement and protect children from long-term health issues.
