Orting, WA heat-detecting drone police rescue operations
The Orting Police Department (OPD) uses a drone equipped with a Forward Looking InfraRed (FLIR) system, which can detect temperature variations, to help with police and rescue operations. The drone displays a variety of colors, making it easy for officers to detect living or inanimate things. The OPD uses the drone with the FLIR system no more than ten times per year. Officers have to get certified and have a remote pilot's license from the Federal Aviation Administration.
