Red Deer, AB refers non-emergency calls to social diversion team during pilot program
Red Deer, AB Social Diversion Team Pilot Program
The 12-month social diversion pilot operates up to 16 hours per day throughout the week. Operators for the 211 service refer non-emergency 911 calls to a newly assembled team. Social diversion staffers determine if the subjects of 211 calls need shelter, medical care, and social services. City officials estimate 30% of 911 calls do not require a police response. The social diversion team also de-escalates situations caused by mental health and addiction issues.
