The Hague, ZH shifts to on-demand waste bin collection with installation of sensor network

The Hague, ZH On-Demand Waste Bin Sensor Network

The year-long project will add sensors to the city's 6,700 public waste bins. A two-month pilot across 1,000 bins preceded the district-by-district installation process. Sensors monitor the fill level of bins and message the waste collection team when pick-ups are necessary. The sensor network also generates data on bin use that indicate foot traffic throughout The Hague. An on-demand collection process saves personnel hours spent checking empty or lightly filled bins.
