Phoenix, AZ collaborates with Venture Café Phoenix on innovation challenge for water access

The city's first innovation challenge sought ideas for expanding public access to cold drinking water. Teams of up to six members developed their concepts during a five-hour hackathon. Participants presented their ideas to a panel of judges during a pitch competition open to the public. The winning team received $3,500, while the runners-up split $1,500 in cash. Phoenix and Venture Café Phoenix also promoted winner, runner-up, and audience choice solutions.

Greater London Authority, GB Challenge LDN seeks ideas for predicting planning permission approval

Challenge LDN asks participants for ideas on predicting planning permission approval based on available data. Individuals and teams submit new methodologies for evaluating applications on the Planning London Datahub. Ten finalists are selected based on criteria including scalability, collaboration, and innovation. Each finalist receives £500 and works with planning experts on idea development. Winning innovations share £3,500 and provide the certainty necessary for smart growth.

Södertälje, SE attracts new ideas for connected, inclusive, and sustainable city during hackathon

Hack for Södertälje 2022 was a 24-hour virtual event open to international teams. Participants were asked for technological solutions to present and future challenges. The judging panel considered the utility, feasibility, and scalability of each project. The winning team received SEK 50,000, while the runner-up and third-place teams won SEK 30,000 and SEK 19,000, respectively. Top teams also received procurement advice from Centigo and one month of office space.

Fredericton, NB pursues innovative uses for its IoT network during annual Fred-eHack event

Fredericton and eleven-x developed a sensor network generating metrics like air quality and parking space usage. The Fred-eHack event asks participants for pitches on how to maximize the network's usage. Hackathon teams use the city's Open Data Portal, sensor development kits, and expert advice during the 12-hour development period. Winning teams qualify for up to CAD 1,000 in cash or CAD 5,000 in eleven-x services and opportunities for city-backed pilots.

Moreton Bay, QLD challenges data practitioners to solve regional issues during GovHack

The three-day virtual event hosted by USC Moreton Bay will produce solutions to challenges in Moreton Bay. Council officials and the university created challenges related to smart job growth, sustainability, and social equity. Participants from the public and private sector form teams and use data supplied by the council for innovation development. GovHack awards a prize in each category for the most innovative idea.

Espoo, FI facilitates customer service improvements with virtual chatbot hackathon

Municipal officials invited Elisa, Fronti.ai, and GetJenny for a one-day hackathon on Microsoft Teams. Participants were asked to create chatbots that improve customer experiences while meeting departmental goals. Espoo supplied the participating companies with data and customer service policies to guide prototype development. Front.ai was selected as the winning team by attendees, though ideas presented by all three companies will shape Espoo's use of chatbots.

Oldenburg Stadt, NI envisions the future of the community with Civic Data Lab Hackathon

A July 2021 kickoff meeting showcased Hackspace Oldenburg and began the brainstorming process. A series of virtual workshops show how to use 3D printers, computer-aided design, and milling for prototype production. The three-day hackathon asks community members to answer the question, "How do we want to live together in 2030?" Innovation teams work with mentors to turn their concepts into functional ideas before their final presentations.

Charlottetown, PEI brainstorms ways to achieve sustainable growth goals during Virtual Hackathon

The one-day event resulted in presentations by 24 students from the University of Prince Edward Island. City departments provided maps, reports, and guidance to teams from multiple disciplines as they developed creative ideas for sustainable growth. A three-member panel of city staffers heard a five-minute presentation and received a written report from each team. The Virtual Hackathon generated new ideas while connecting students to public policy development.

Maple Ridge, BC generates ideas for achieving strategic goals with virtual hackathon

The four-phase event started with a month-long open call for project ideas. A panel of city officials, tech experts, and sponsor representatives narrowed the list for the prototyping stage based in part on the city's Strategic Plan. Successful projects hit on one of five goals including community safety and growth. Semifinalist showed their prototypes at the 2021 ICF Smart21 Conference with the top project receiving $3,000 CAD.

Albany, WA hosted a hackathon to generate ideas for creating locally sourced renewable energy

The two-day hackathon focused on turning Albany into Australia's first city powered entirely by renewable energy by 2028. Participating teams turned green energy concepts into models and simulations evaluated by judges. The winning Pure Power team presented a cost-effective method for turning waste into biofuels for regional consumers. Western Power committed to working with Pure Power over six months to further develop their concept.
