Atlanta, GA converts shipping containers into affordable housing

In light of a growing homeless population in Atlanta, city officials are converting shipping containers into affordable housing units that are accessible for those with disabilities and also include a bathroom, a bed and a refrigerator.. With 40 housing units now in use, the city has plans to add another 20,000 units by 2030.

Kansas City, MO improves maternal and infant health outcomes with KCMO Doula Initiative

Kansas City approved a $250,000 partnership with Uzazi Village for free doula services to qualifying participants. Eligible residents are 8 to 20 months pregnant and earn up to 400% of the federal poverty guidelines. The program connects each participant to an experienced doula for guidance from early pregnancy through the postpartum period. Project leaders anticipate improved health for parents and newborns in communities facing healthcare disparities.

Aalborg, DK and Rødovre develop AI-powered platform for hospital rehabilitation recommendations

Aalborg and Rødovre spend 3,000 staff hours per year on planning rehabilitation paths for patients admitted to hospitals. A newly designed platform turns data on 18,000 past patients into insights on how future patients should be treated. Licensed clinicians review recommendations and develop treatment plans in collaboration with the platform. The municipalities received 5.9 million kroner from a national innovation fund for the project.

West Allis, WI Mobile Integrated Health Program improves community response to opioid crisis

The West Allis Fire Department's MIH team uses ImageTrend software to identify local trends in substance use disorders. Dedicated paramedics respond to provider referrals related to substance use disorders within 24 hours of notification. These responses include conversations with patients' families, harm-reduction kit deliveries, and transportation to non-ER healthcare providers. MIH also works with Milwaukee County on incident responses in neighboring communities.

London Royal Borough of Greenwich, GB informs care technology use with Resident Design Group

Borough officials and Rethink Partners initially spoke with 200 residents and practitioners about Assistive Technology Enabled Care (ATEC) options. The Resident Design Group is a 12-member group meeting monthly to turn initial findings into real-world solutions. The borough recruited residents with experiences in social care or providing care to loved ones for the group. Participants receive vouchers during the co-design process with additional feedback sought after ATEC implementation.

Goodyear, AZ addresses obstacles to mental health access with its Health is Wealth pilot

The one-year pilot provides mental health counseling sessions through project partner Trauma Recovery Services of Arizona (TRSAZ). Eligible residents aged 13 and older are uninsured, underinsured, or meet income requirements for participation. TRSAZ offers up to 10 virtual counseling sessions per participant including individual, couples, and group therapy. Goodyear will cover the out-of-pocket costs for 300 residents during the pilot.

Residents and prescribers toggle listed prescription or over-the-counter medicines to find real-time availability at 16 locations. Medications from Aciclovar to multivitamins are listed with their delivery methods and dosage.

East Sussex County Council, GB conducts RoboPets pilot for residents with early-stage dementia

The one-year pilot delivered 50 robotic dogs or cats to residents working with the county's Occupational Therapy team. RoboPets provide companionship for dementia patients as they experience worsening symptoms. The realistic companions also act as conversation starters between residents, carers, and loved ones. A successful rollout led East Sussex County Council to recruit 50 more participants in need of RoboPets.

Borough officials sought a sustainable solution to the lack of period product access in schools and public places. Residents aged 24 and under can request free subscriptions through council partner Grace & Green. Subscription boxes can be delivered to home addresses or picked up at local collection points. The company also maintains stands with free products in select locations. Grace & Green products are organic and biodegradable for lower impacts on the environment than plastic products.

Isle of Wight Council, GB responds to non-emergency falls with Wightcare Community Falls Response

The council and Isle of Wight Trust Ambulance Service partnered on a dedicated team for in-home falls by seniors. First responders to 999 or 111 calls determine if falls require ambulance trips and contact the team for falls without serious injury. Team members respond in an average of one hour, thus eliminating the possibility of long periods on the floor. Wightcare Community Falls Response reduces hospital admittance rates and better allocates emergency resources.

Whitby, ON addresses healthcare gaps with Family Physician Recruitment Incentive Partnership Pilot

The five-year pilot will recruit up to 10 new family physicians for the new West Whitby Health Centre. Recruited physicians receive CAD 50,000 each for serving at least 1,000 local patients through the pilot period. Town officials and facility operator Oshawa Clinic Group share the cost of physician incentives. Whitby hopes that a fully staffed health centre will better serve the 230,000 regional residents without primary care physicians.

Project operator The Salvation Army schedules and travels with participants to appointments. The program focuses on unhoused residents, people leaving incarceration, and victims of domestic violence. Hobart's financial contribution to the project covers up to three half-hour appointments per participant. Health with Dignity is a low-cost method for building relationships between practitioners and patients who only seek care during emergencies.
