Akron, OH is piloting the use of telehealth technology in ambulances to reduce emergency room visits
The Akron Fire Department (AFD) is collaborating with the Cleveland Clinic to pilot the use of telehealth in ambulances. The telehealth technology allows EMTs and paramedics to help patients talk to a physician instead of taking them to an emergency room. The pilot program follows the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services ET3 model and is only used in non-emergency situations. Each of the AFD's 14 ambulances is equipped for telehealth and the service has been used over 1,000 times so far.

Akron, OH passed a law requiring video footage of use-of-force incidents be released within 7 days
The Akron City Council approved a law requiring the city to release video footage of use-of-force incidents by the police department within seven days of the incident. The video footage from body worn cameras will be automatically posted on the police department's website and if possible it must include at least three camera angles. Any member of the public can petition the city for release of footage they believe has failed to meet these requirements.

Akron, OH partnered with Flowbird to relaunch metered parking with a new mobile app option
The City of Akron's parking operator, ABM Parking Services, has partnered with Flowbird Group, a kerbside management and urban mobility solutions provider, to relaunch metered parking with the Flowbird mobile parking app. The mobile app features a map-based user interface integrated with Waze to guide users to their preferred parking location. The app also allows downtown visitors to pay for parking and receive text notifications when time is about to expire and extend their time.

Akron, OH launches the Targeted Help for Resilient Innovative Entrepreneurs (THRIVE) program
The City of Akron is launching the Targeted Help for Resilient Innovative Entrepreneurs (THRIVE) program to grow local Black-owned businesses. The THRIVE program will use a unique "medical rounds" approach that pairs entrepreneurs with a THRIVE Entrepreneurship Pathway Advisor (TEPA) to guide them through a suite of financial support and expert resources. The city hopes that the THRIVE program will create 200 new Black-owned businesses by 2030.

This annual challenge seeks applications by neighborhood groups to improve Akron's 161 parks. Each application proposes upgrades ranging from community gardens to health and wellness activities. A panel of judges from project partners like Akron Parks Collaborative selects recipients of up to $100,000 based on sustainability, equity, and feasibility.

Akron, OH is partnering with Colu to develop an app reward program for residents that shop locally
In an attempt to salvage local businesses during the pandemic, the City of Akron is partnering with an Israeli-based company called Colu. Colu's product rewards citizens with "city coins" for shopping at local businesses that can later be used as discounts at participating stores. In Akron, they are focusing on marketing for organizations owned by women and minorities. The hope is that this partnership will encourage citizens to shop locally and help improve revenues for their small businesses.
