Derbyshire Dales District Council, GB reduces waste collection needs with public smart bins
Derbyshire Dales District Council, GB Smart Waste Bins
Forty-two Bigbelly bins replaced 115 standard public bins across the district's five local councils. Each bin uses a solar-powered compactor to increase storage capacity eight times over a traditional bin. Waste collectors receive automated messages from Bigbelly bins when service is required. The switch to self-compacting bins eliminated the need for multiple daily collections that strained council resources.

Crushing blow for litter in the Dales! - Derbyshire Dales District Council
Derbyshire Dales District Council has installed 42 'Big Belly Bins' across the five towns of the Derbyshire Dales. The compacting Big Belly Bins (BBBs) hold almost eight times as much as a standard bin thanks to a solar-powered crushing mechanism. They feature a sealed hopper, meaning litter can’t blow out of the bin and animals can’t get in either.
Bigbelly Smart Bins Reduce Bin Collections in Derbyshire Dales by 95%
Overflowing bins, vermin risks and shrinking resources are what prompted Derbyshire Dales Council to replace 115 litterbins with only 42 Bigbelly units - a decision that has since reduced unnecessary bin empties by up to 95% within some parts of the local authority.
Project Succeeded
The council reported that 95% of smart bin collections took place when containers were full including a 100% rate during a single week.
