Kingston, VIC QR Code Rubbish Collection System expedites turnaround on public bin reports

City officials pursued a solution to frequent overflows across Kingston's 1,000 bins. The previous system required phone calls that were manually referred to contractors for collection the next business day. Kingston placed QR codes on public bins that open a dedicated reporting form when scanned. User reports of overflows, bin damage, and graffiti are automatically sent to waste contractors. A direct line to the waste management team means issues are fixed in hours instead of days.

Kingston, VIC adds recycled stormwater pipes to their sustainable procurement options

The council worked with Victoria-based RPM Pipes to install stormwater pipes made from recycled materials. This 60-meter project at The Corso Reserve spared enough plastic to make 29,000 milk bottles. Kingston is the first community in Victoria to use RPM's pipes typically produced for farming and mining clients. Council leaders are pursuing similar projects in Kingston as part of the Circular Advantage initiative for sustainable purchases.

Kingston, VIC develops solar chimney design for public building for climate control and fire safety

Kingston's Facilities Management team worked with RMIT University on this unique design. The solar chimney added to the Mentone Reserve Pavilion vents air naturally by using solar heat to pull inside air to the outdoors. This chimney also pulls smoke out of the building with its vent design. RMIT University researchers estimated a 50% decrease in cooling costs and a seven-fold increase in evacuation time due to the solar chimney.
