Los Angeles County launched the "LA50K" harm reduction initiative to distribute 50,000 boxes of naloxone to normalize its use as treatment for combating the opioid overdose epidemic. The initiative involved distributing naloxone to vulnerable residents through community groups, the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, the Department of Health Services, and even creating free naloxone vending machines in county jails.
Project Succeeded
The county has already surpassed its goal by handing out more than 54,000 boxes of naloxone. Program officials had gotten reports of more than 5,800 instances in which the naloxone was used during an overdose.
