The North Liberty City Council unanimously approved a new ordinance which allows defendants charged with misdemeanor hate crimes to be prosecuted, fined, and jailed. According to the law, a "bias-motivated hate crime" occurs when someone is targeted because of their race, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, age, etc. If convicted, an offender would face a fine between $300 to $855 or up to 30 days in prison.
