Rock Island, IL Urban Homestead Program turns blighted properties into affordable homes
Rock Island first piloted the program with a 15th Street property purchased at auction. An environmental survey and abatement preceded a whole-home rehabilitation project. This overhaul included new wiring, upgraded appliances, and exterior repairs. Project costs were covered by federal housing funds and the rehabilitated home was sold at an affordable price. City officials want the program to follow this approach for two properties per year, thus expanding the affordable housing stock.

Rock Island, IL launched an "Adopt-a-Park" program for local businesses and community organizations
The Rock Island Parks Department launched a new "Adopt-a-Park" program for local businesses and community organizations. The program requires the adopting group to work in the park at least one day per month during the spring and fall months. That work could include painting, laying mulch, planting, or even organizing a trash clean-up day. The parks department pays for any of the supplies needed for the work and encourages participants to propose park improvements.
