Sutherland Shire, NSW uses Balancing Act's Housing Simulation tool for long-term housing plan

Residents were asked for their suggestions on how to add 1,000 dwellings to the shire by 2041. The tool allows a user to create their own housing plan with modifications down to the parcel level. Housing Simulation uses real-world zoning and land use constraints for realistic insights. Sutherland Shire Council received 286 plans from residents in its initial engagement effort with plans for additional rounds of Housing Simulation use.

Sutherland Shire, NSW tests all-electric street sweeper in effort to reduce fleet emissions

The council incorporated a CityCat V20e sweeper into its fleet during a one-month pilot. The plug-in sweeper from Bucher Municipal lasts up to eight hours per charge and recharges without special equipment. Additional features like articulated steering and low-noise operation improve experiences for drivers and residents. If successful, the CityCat V20e would join four plug-in cars and an electric garbage truck in the council's zero-emission fleet.

Sutherland Shire, NSW produces localized feedback on tree planting plans with interactive maps

The map detailed proposed tree plantings in four suburbs as part of Sutherland's 3K Trees in 2020 initiative. Council work teams edited the map as they marked locations for the proposal. Participants used the tool to review tree species and location before providing their feedback. Local residents requested free trees in a separate form for additional foliage on their properties. The Green Streets map builds on existing tools like the Native Plant Selector.
