Topeka, KS speeds up meter reading with advanced meter infrastructure (AMI) project
The AMI uses radio to communicate water usage information from 57,000 meters to radio-receiving locations. City officials used 27 public buildings to cover 80% of meters in Topeka. The remaining 20% of meters are read by equipment on four newly installed poles.

Sixty-foot-tall steel poles will be put up at four sites in Topeka as part of a project that will enable the city's utilities department to read all of the city's 57,000 water meters by radio, the city announced Thursday. The poles will be put up at 515 S.W. Horne, 4813 S.W. 17th, 2350 S.W. Pepperwood and 1650 N.W. Fredith Lane, he said.
