Western Bay of Plenty District Council partnered with Waste Watchers Limited to conduct a six-month Pongakawa rural recycling trial. This project established the Pongakawa mobile recycling centre to support rural areas where the Council does not plan to implement a kerbside collection service. The trial was designed to examine the use of drop-off points in order to evaluate the level of demand for a kerbside recycling, glass, and rubbish collection service in those rural areas.

Western Bay of Plenty District Council is converting 1500 urban street lights to more efficient and eco-friendly LED lights. The Council is conducting this upgrade project as both a financial and an environmental investment. The Council selected LED bulbs with a warm-white, low colour temperature to minimise the effects on surrounding wildlife and private properties while providing effective street lighting for drivers.

Western Bay of Plenty District Council launched the "Hello Future District" campaign to receive community feedback on key projects and services. Originally the Council planned three public events for the campaign but they were cancelled due to the COVID-19 lockdown. Instead the Council developed an interactive website which features information on key projects along with sections for polls, comments, and questions. Participants are automatically entered into a $100 grocery voucher raffle.

Western Bay of Plenty District Council is partnering with Kleana Bins to provide a waste collection service for residents living in remote areas. This project was designed to assist individuals unable to dispose of their waste due to the COVID-19 lockdown and reduce illegal dumping in rural areas.. This partnership allows Kleana Bins to collect waste directly from the property of rural residents if they are able to pay for the service.
