The New York City Council passed police reform legislation which ends qualified immunity for officers of the New York Police Department. The city is the first in the nation to remove qualified immunity which protected officers against civil lawsuits alleging they violated a person's rights. The new police reform legislation protects residents against unreasonable search and excessive force by banning the use of qualified immunity as a defense.
