The New York City Council approved a new measure that provides non-citizens the right to vote in municipal elections. The measure gives approximately 800,000 legally documented, voting-age non-citizens access to the ballot box. According to the measure, non-citizens would still not be allowed to vote for presidents or members of Congress in federal races or for governors, judges, and legislators in the state elections.

NEW YORK (AP) — Noncitizens in New York City would gain the right to vote in municipal elections under a measure approved Thursday by the City Council that would give access to the ballot box to 800,000 green card holders and so-called Dreamers.
