The New York City Council passed a bill requiring hotel owners that closed entirely of laid off 75% of their staff during the COVID-19 pandemic to provide severance pay for their service employees. According to the bill, eligible employees would be owed $500 per week for up to 30 weeks. Hotels that recall at least 25% of their employees by October 11th and reopen by November 1st are considered exempt from the mandate.
