Oakland, CA MACRO civilian crisis response program
Planning
The City of Oakland is launching a one-year pilot of the Mobile Assistance Community Responders (MACRO) program which reimagines public safety. The new program will send unarmed civilians with medical and mental health training to respond to non-violent emergency calls instead of the police. The Oakland Fire Department will run the program using the existing 911 dispatch system and county EMTs and mental health experts will be contracted as the civilian responder volunteers.
