Seattle, WA consolidates public discounts and benefits into a single resource with CiviForm

The city's IT and Innovation and Performance teams worked with Google Fellows on CiviForm's customization. CiviForm allows residents to determine eligibility and apply for discount programs on one site. The platform began with applications for six benefits including the Gold Card for seniors, the FLASH card for residents with disabilities, and Parks and Recreation scholarships. All city departments are expected to use CiviForm by 2024 with potential household savings of up to $23,000 annually.

Alameda County, CA develops chatbots for more accessible and efficient public services

Alameda County's first experience with chatbots was the in-house development of CACHe early in the COVID-19 pandemic. CACHe directs users to vaccination, testing, and support services available through county health partners. The Information Technology Development created an internal chatbot for employee help desk tickets. The ACGOV Chatbot introduced in December 2022 answers frequently asked questions from the county's main page, thus reducing call and email frequency.

Chicago, IL DiverseTech apprenticeship initiative creates talent pipeline for city IT roles

Chicago is working with the University of Illinois and SDI Presence to select a 25-member cohort. Project leaders will recruit community college students from underrepresented communities for the program. Apprentices spend 15 months on a combination of hands-on work experiences, mentoring, and classroom learning. The DiverseTech curriculum responds to IT challenges facing Chicago with apprentices prepared for cybersecurity and digital services roles in city departments.

Amsterdam introduced a Zerocopter form for ethical hackers who identify exploitable issues in the city's systems. The hotline form offers anonymity or optional registration for progress tracking. This reporting system gathers links, attachments, and descriptions for targeted responses by city IT staff.

Cook County, IL trains veterans for IT employment at the Chicago Cook Technology Academy

Cook County, Microsoft, and National Able Network are hosting five training cohorts through 2024. Each seven-week session teaches cloud administration or development to military veterans moving into civilian careers. Graduates of the Chicago Cook Technology Academy receive interviews for entry-level positions with the county's partner employers. The platform combines service requests, records, and communications with each resident into a single view. Council leaders began its Civica Digital360 integration with benefits, tax, and welfare services before expanding to other service areas. Digital360 advances the council's commitment to moving all IT processes to the cloud. This project also reduces paperwork, cuts down on emissions from travel to council offices, and supports remote services by 160 council employees.

Moorabool, VIC Project X reinforces new document naming convention through creative promotions

The council's shift to SharePoint in 2020 revealed inconsistencies in file names and drive locations. IT team members created a one-sheet defining a uniform naming convention based on six descriptive components. This convention allows any user to understand the document's purpose without opening a file. Volunteers from council departments promoted the new standard through artistic endeavors including a comic strip and a short film.
