Phoenix, AZ partners with Kando on AI-powered monitoring of its wastewater treatment infrastructure

Sixteen sensors were deployed at sewer drains throughout the city for a six-month pilot. Real-time data on changes in wastewater pH and temperatures caused by illegal dumping are sent to the Kando Pulse platform. Automated alerts help the city's wastewater team identify dumping incidents and isolate pollutants before they enter the treatment process. An internal dashboard provides an overview of system conditions and hotspots for dumping incidents.

Darwin, NT opens Australian-first wastewater treatment process focused on PFAS removal from leachate

A Low-Energy Evaporative Fractionation (LEEF) system was added to the Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility. LEEF removes poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from landfill leachate without additional chemicals, thus preventing harmful runoff. This process can eliminate up to 99% of PFAS from leachate. The facility also features a wetland evaporation system for the removal of ammonia and other contaminants. Local officials estimate a processing capacity of 50 megaliters per year for the new system.

Sioux City, IA is generating revenue from biogas captured in wastewater treatment plant

The Sioux City Wastewater Treatment Plant is capturing biogas resulting from anaerobic digestion, purifying it in a multi-step process, and injecting it into a natural gas pipeline. The Sioux City Council approved a transaction confirmation agreement with The Energy Authority, Inc. of Jacksonville, Florida to sell the biogas and help offset future sewer rate hikes.

Le Mans, PDL converts waste into a renewable resource with the completion of its biogas plant

A two-year construction project resulted in the first biogas facility in the Sarthe department. Sludge from the Veolia-run wastewater facility is converted into biomethane at the new plant. This natural gas is fed into the GrDF gas pipeline that serves local buildings. The biogas plant produces enough natural gas for 1,500 homes. Le Mans anticipates an annual emissions reduction of 3,500 tons and a 30% cut in sludge discharge into waterways.

Colorado Springs, CO finds cost-effective solution to stormwater pollution with Gutter Bins

Gutter Bins are drain grates that filter up to 125 pounds of microplastics, trash, and other debris per month into durable storage bags. The city's Stormwater Enterprise and Frog Creek Partners first trialed three Gutter Bins in 2019. An additional six bins were installed in 2020 following initial success. Colorado Springs created a Clean Water Community Challenge for businesses and local organizations to sponsor the installation of branded Gutter Bins.

West Lafayette, IN new collecting bin transports food waste for conversion into renewable energy

The City of West Lafayette's Streets and Sanitation Department is using a new food waste collecting bin to reduce its carbon footprint. Previously households and businesses were only able to drop off their food waste at one designated spot at the sanitation office. The new collecting bin allows city sanitation trucks to easily transport food waste to the wastewater treatment plant where an anaerobic digester turns it into renewable energy that helps powers the plant.

Portable cameras are dropped into sewer mains for street-by-street assessments of structural integrity and flow. These videos identify cracks and obstructions before they impact the public.
