Waikato District Council partnered with Xtreme Zero Waste to conduct a trial of kerbside food waste collection services. During the trial, every participating household was provided with the necessary equipment including kitchen caddies, compostable bags, and a green kerbside bin. Within 18 months, the service diverted 225 tonnes of food waste from going to the landfill. Once the trial period ended, the proposed cost of continuing the service was $79.29 per year for each household.

During public consultation, 60% of the 774 submissions received from residents said they would not be willing to support a targeted rate of $79.29 for the service to continue. Waikato District Council’s Strategy and Finance Committee listened to the community and decided to suspend the service.
