Waikato Regional Council partnered with the Department of Corrections Central Region, the Department of Conservation and Waste Management New Zealand to provide environmental education to prisons. The goal of the partnership was to protect the natural environment, provide education and skills training to prisoners, and reduce the rate of re-offending. The Council's role in the partnership was to provide support, resources, and expertise on environmental education.
